Established and developed in Canberra, Communities@Work is a local organisation that understands local needs. With nearly 40 years of experience, we provide a wide range of services across the entire Australian Capital Territory and also serve clients in the Greater Capital Region.

We deliver services to more than 20,000 people annually with a paid workforce of up to 700 staff, 150 self-employed family day care educators and the passionate commitment of over 300 volunteers.

About the role

The role of a Disability Support Worker requires an active and collaborative approach to supporting people with a disability and/or mental health issues.

A key responsibility of a support worker is to contribute to the development, delivery and evaluation of person-centred service delivery and to actively participate in supporting program participants to reach their individual life goals.

You will be required to connect with clients on an individual and small group basis, understand their needs and create an environment that enhances learning and significantly improves the lives of vulnerable people in our community.

This is a casual role. Flexible hours are available weekdays, weekends and evenings with a focus on After School Care and School Holiday times, dependent on program needs. You must be willing to work across various ACT locations.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be required to:

  • Provide support on a one on one basis
  • Work with small or large groups of clients
  • Provide personal care and in-home domestic assistance
  • Use your individual skill set to foster independence, improve resilience, enhance capacity and build or maintain social relationships for clients.
  • Provide social support including connecting and engaging clients in their local community
  • Facilitate activities that enable clients to have new experiences and learn new skills
  • Contribute to the delivery of Communities@Work’s Lifestyle Service.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Maintain current 'Working with Vulnerable People' registration
  • An appropriate disability qualification or working toward, with proven experience of working with persons with disabilities
  • Ability to work directly with persons with disabilities using a best practice approach that is consistent with the National Standards for Disability and Home Care Services.
  • Knowledge of or the capacity to rapidly acquire awareness of a person-centered approach and the capacity to delivery supports consistent with this approach
  • Commitment to continuing professional and persoanl development to ensure the provision of best practice services.
  • Flexible and reliable
  • Willingness to work across various ACT locations

Desirable

  • Current driver's licence
  • First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain
